The Whites...in our hometown papers!

WOW!!!

Here's a LINK to a nice article written by Kristine Goodrich from the White Bear Press, Rachael's hometown newspaper.

It details some of our experiences in Tokyo and how we've chronicled our adventure with this blog.

Enjoy!

  2. I read the article and got to your website. I grew up in Vadnais Heights and my wife is from Japan so we travel there often. Never got a chance to live there, so reading your blog is a nice way to vicariously live there at least ;)

My wife teaches Japanese at a High School in Eau Claire WI and she takes her seniors in a two-week trip every summer. I go along as chaperone/assistant, and we visit all over Japan with the wonderful Japan Rail pass. We go to Kyoto, Nara, Osaka, Miyajima, Hiroshima, Yokohama, and several areas in downtown Tokyo (Shinjuku, Iidabashi, Ueno, Shibuya, etc).

Her family lives near Kasukabe near the Saitama/Chiba prefeture border, so our kids stay with Obaasan and Ogiisan while we are away with students. Then I fly back with students and she stays for 4 weeks more with her family.

My daughter is 5 and while in Japan she goes to a preschool every day for 5 weeks. Her Japanese is pretty good for living in Wisconsin the other 11 months of the year!

During the rest of the year she also goes to a Japanese school in St. Paul on Saturday mornings. She loves it.

Sounds like you two have a nice new apartment and have fun in Japan. I hope to keep checking back to see your observations on life in Tokyo. The photos are great too, even the ones just showing Japan's Domino pizza. Ahhh, corn and mayonnaise on pizza! I remember now... can't wait to get back again in June!

Check out our Japan trip website, http://www.nagaisensei.com with details of different year's trips.

    Mata-ne and best wishes!

  3. Dear Darryl and Hiroko,

Thanks so much for the message! Life in Japan is surreal to say the least, and always seems to provide us with a mix of wonder, frustration, and amazement.

From the photo albums on that site, it looks like your wife's students get a great taste of Japan. We might even have to make more effort to get to some of the places you visit on the 2-week tour.

We'll have our first Minnesota visitor this week and will be heading to Kyoto and Kamakura. Ironically, when you're in Japan next we will be back in Minnesota with friends and family.

Thanks again for the message and keep in touch! And let us know if there's anything you think we should do some "reporting" on that we've missed. It looks like you're into cycling, so there have been a few recent ones about that. My next entry will be about Japanese "super toilets"- always a joy.

    Take care,
    Brad & Rachael
